Star Wars is back in theaters this weekend. You probably know, unless you live under a rock. You’ve seen the commercials, you have friends going, or you’re planning on going. So I’m going to do my best to spare you of spoilers.

The scroll at the beginning of the film starts and I get a little teary eyed. This film has been a long time coming. Reading the scroll makes it clear that the remnants of “The Empire” now called “The First Order” is on the rise and Luke Skywalker is hiding somewhere. The Rebellion aka The Resistance is trying desperately to find him.

So we enter on a planet called Jakku which is very reminiscent of Tatooine. There we meet Poe Dameron who is on the trail of Skywalker and the First Order is hot on Dameron’s trail trying to steal that information. So this is where our adventure begins. I don’t exactly want to reveal any more of the plot, because I think that would just really ruin the film for anyone going to see it.

I will say that the film is chock full of the action and humor you would expect from a Star Wars film, the story is pretty damn solid as well. Director J.J. Abrams has succeeded in giving the fans the Star Wars film they deserve, and none of the lens flare effects so many were worried about.

The cast for this new film are on a rocket ship for super stardom without even realizing it yet. Everyone will know their names soon, and for good reason. While the film has the star power of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill from the first trilogy, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and John Boyega are the films true stars. Taking the torch and holding it high so to speak. It’s clear that these three will be fantastic in the following films of the new trilogy.

The effects look pretty fantastic for the most part. I don’t care for so much CGI and I feel the same with this film. It should be used to enhance. The best CGI is the kind you can’t really see.  There were a little too many CGI characters for my taste in this new film. Sure it looks good now, but in 20 years when technology has advanced.. how will it look. Technical effects from the first trilogy hold up. Thank god cute little BB-8 is a real practically built droid, and Chewbacca is still Peter Mayhew in a big furry suit.

While the movie is awesome and I would see it over and over again in a heart beat. I can see it getting criticized for it’s layout. Which may be completely unintentional. But it’s like they took A New Hope, and saw the outline and then just used that to create a new story. They are on a Desert Planet, First Order is searching for a droid with information, they of course visit a cantina, First Order are on a “Planet” ship that is oddly like the Deathstar…   And there are several more parallels.

So it borderlines on a remake with new characters. I mean sure history repeating itself, but you mean to tell me that the Rebellion learned nothing from the past? That’s my biggest complaint about the film. It’s a huge galaxy with huge possibilities and they follow the A New Hope formula. Talk about playing it safe. I hope by the next film, they deviate off of the path and carve out one hell of an epic story that the fans of this Saga want to see and deserve to see.

Even with all of the critical issues I had with the film. I still enjoyed the heck out of it. Go see it! Don’t waste time, go now!
