Vince Gill at Bass Hall

Published on December 4th, 2015

Every year, UNT hold their “Evening with a Legend” fundraising event, and this year they had true country legend Vince Gill on stage to entertain those in attendance. Most people know Gill’s tunes even if they don’t know that they do.

Gill wasted no time jumping into “One More Last Chance” and getting the crowd clapping and singing along. I don’t know if the perfection of his vocals can truly be described until you hear it live. I mean of course he sounds great on his albums. But in person it’s even better, such a rich voice. It was completely clear when he slowed things down for songs like “I still believe in you.” If it wasn’t clear already, we were in for a fantastic 90 minutes of great music.

Gill has had a career that spans at least 31 years, he’s a man who’s been performing as long as I’ve been alive. He’s won 20.. yes TWENTY Grammy awards. He’s got the resume that screams great performer, and his on stage presence is giant. Yet I don’t think folks realize how amazing he is until they get to see him live. It was a real treat to get to see him in a venue as wonderful as Bass Hall. A place even Gill was excited to be playing in.

The evening was full of tunes from his entire catalog (especially the older hits) and even a few nods to Country Greats like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Gill knows the roots of his craft and isn’t hesitant to give credit where it’s due, in form of a great cover.

If you weren’t there to experience this wonderful evening, well there is good news. Gill has a new album coming out early in 2016. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see him return to the DFW area for an encore. If you like country music, and I’m talking real country music, (not that “Bro Country”) you should make an effort to go see him. It’s worth your time and you will leave as impressed as I did.
