New Kids on the Block at American Airlines Center

Published on May 29th, 2015

Those New Kids just keep coming back for more. Bringing their “Main Event” tour to the American Airlines center earlier this month. Proving that women everywhere are never too old to embrace the boy bands, and those now grown men onstage are never to old to give us choreographed dance moves.

The New Kids on the Block, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood, Jonathan and Jordan Knight, have been back on the road touring regularly again since 2008. There doesn’t seem to be any sign of slowing down either. With every tour they bring to town, they change up the stage, the set list, and the show. Helping them throw back to more retro were TLC and Nelly as the opening acts. But like a true event, there were never any real set changes. It flowed from one act, to the next, and to the next. The only intermissions being a video introduction of sorts.

The boys opened with Block Party and popped off the pyro and confetti and let everyone know that it was just going to be about having a night of fun. While there’s nothing amazing or ground breaking about the music they perform. It’s just fun. They put on an energetic show, they get the audience into it, they go as far as to traipse through the aisles to get up close and personal with the fans there to see them.

Sure they aren’t always in tune, especially during Donnie’s solo set. But that isn’t what a New Kids show is about. The New Kids show is about going to see a band you love for what they are and having a good time.

While there were plenty of old school hits from Cover Girl to Right Stuff and Hanging Tough. NKOTB proved they can still having a great hit song with tunes like Summertime and crowd favorites like Dirty Dancing. What could make the night better you ask. Well I think if you did ask an audience member, they might have just said “The Quick Change Cam.” That’s right folks, a camera where you can see the boys changing outfits under the stage, getting down to their boxers and shaking it for those cameras.

Oh My! New Kids is always a blast. You have to hand it to them. They deliver exactly what their audience is there for. If you like them you would love their show, if you don’t care, you wouldn’t care. They aren’t trying to appeal to anyone who doesn’t genuinely care about them. So if you’re a Block Head, you were probably there, if you weren’t well don’t worry about it. Just know that a great time was had by those who did go.
