Star Trek Into Darkness Review

Grade: A

The much anticipated sequel to the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot of Star Trek soared into theaters today! After a 4 year wait Trek fans can rejoice. Star Trek Into Darkness is bigger and bolder than the first one.

We are reunited with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise and it’s a good feeling. Kirk is still leading his crew with his gut instinct instead of the logical choices Spock tries to talk him into. But that’s just the start of the trouble. Star Fleets own John Harrison has attacked the base in London, and then attempts to take out the top guys of Star Fleet in the U.S.

I don’t really want to give away the plot to the film beyond that, because we all hate big spoilers. The film is a solid 2 hours and is full of action. The plot is mostly solid but some may find it predictable. In fact that’s my only beef with the whole thing. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.

I don’t really think it needs to be said but Benedict Cumberbatch plays a manipulative evil with ease.  His role was also quite physical and he pulled it off with a bad ass kind of grace. Saying Cumberbatch is a great actor is like saying the sky is blue.

The ensemble that is the Crew of the Starship Enterprise is what really makes or breaks these films and the cast knocks it out of the park.

I’m a sucker for Chris Pine and he’s still a top notch Kirk. Zoe Saldana gets a significantly bigger part in this film and proves she can hang with the boys. But Karl Urban as Bones is the real scene stealer among the Enterprise gang.

I’m ready to see where the enterprise goes next! The possibilities are endless and I hope that Abrams is ready and willing to boldly go there for at least one or two more films. His leadership really makes these films exciting. He takes the time to build sets and use practical effects not just CGI and I truly appreciate his respect in authentically making a film like this. It helps the actors perform and it just looks good to the audience watching.

Star Trek Into Darkness might just be the best action film of the Summer, and one of the best films of the year. Go see it!
