Grade: A
Some films can just stand the test of time. Disney’s The Lion King happens to be one of them. Let’s face it, there’s only a hand full of Disney animated films that don’t. The Lion King was what I grew up with and is my favorite of all the Disney animated features. It was that film that I drove my parents insane watching over and over and over. Singing “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” obnoxiously at the top of my lungs, all the time. Good Times.
So how could I resist the nostalgia of going to see it on the big screen once again. For kicks I checked out the 3D version. Honestly, it doesn’t really add anything to the film. I’m sure the 3D conversion guys are mad at this statement, but who cares. It didn’t take away from it either, it was just kind of there. Making you wonder whats the point??
Almost 20 years later the Lion King is still just as great as it was when I was a kid, I still get choked up when Mufasa dies (okay if that spoils it for you, seriously? You haven’t seen it yet??!?,) I still smile at the silly jokes Timon & Pumba make, and I still quietly sang along. It was like traveling back in time. The most bizarre part of it was, I thought the movie was a lot longer than it actually is. I guess time goes by slower as a kid, ironic huh?
It made me miss the days of actual quality animation, that was done by hand. Maybe Disney will get a little wild, and try for another classic film like this. I know I miss them.
