The latest addition to the recent craze of super hero movies, storms into theaters this weekend. X-Men First Class, the prequel of sorts to the original X-Men films, gives us some insight as to how the group was started. We’re introduced to much younger versions of Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto and Charles Xavier aka Professor X, as they are discovering that there are many more mutants like themselves, some good and some evil.
As they struggle with being outcasts, they also learn that the government is afraid of the power they possess. Making them an allies but also targets. Magneto knowing plenty well what man is capable of when they are afraid of something. Charles is hesitant to agree with Erik, hoping that the non mutants open their eyes to see not all mutants use their powers for evil.

I went into this screening a little bit hesitant. I enjoy the X-men films, but the past couple weren’t quite up to par. X-men: Last Stand was bloated with too many mutants, and that’s the one thing I was hoping that First Class wouldn’t be. Then you had X-Men Origins which was a little boring. I mean it’s Wolverine! Nothing about him should be boring! So I went into this with low expectations and I can whole heartedly say, I was pleasantly surprised.
The two and a half hour long film, never really lost my attention. That’s a big thing as far as I’m concerned. Could they have trimmed a few things? Probably, but it still holds up strong. As far as I’m concerned the very charming James McAvoy makes this film what it is. However Michael Fassbender does a fantastic job as Magneto. Most people won’t really know him, but he has quite the resume on IMDB that includes films like 300 and Inglorious Bastards. This role will really make people take notice.
Director Matthew Vaughn who’s responsible for films like Kick Ass, did a fantastic job. He took a period piece about mutants and did what very few directors could do, turned it into an interesting story, with some great action, and even some fun humor.
Fans of the comics should be pleased with the film, and fans of the X-men movies will definitely enjoy some of the surprises and nods to previous films. If you like superhero flicks or the X-men, there’s no doubt you will like this one.
As far as ranking among summer films goes, I don’t know if it beats Thor for me. But it is a close second! I liked it more than the Hangover that’s for sure! I cant wait to see if they continue this franchise. I hope so.
